Hillside view of Trieste and sailboats in the bay awaiting their captains!
Trieste Italy! A beautiful and charming seaport village that sits in the top easternmost corner of Italy is as impressive of an Italian City as any other! Just 20 minutes from the Slovenian border, Trieste is a town of many cultures but at the same time distinctly Italian. Come with me as we meander down it’s narrow streets and winding pathways, up steep cobblestone steps to view the city from an ancient hilltop, then along the canal and over the bridge to sip a cappuccino or maybe a “Capo in B” by the bay.
I am no expert on Italy or even Trieste but I do want to share the wonders I was so blessed to experience on this amazing adventure.
OUR STAY: SAVIA EXCELSIOR PALACE
We loved this hotel! The moment you arrive, the Door Man greets you and insists on helping you inside while simultaneously taking your luggage. You automatically feel special. The desk attendant smiles, tells you they have been expecting you and that you’re going to love your room! She is right. The room was extravagant and matched the feel of a hotel, exceptionally beautiful! Service was excellent and there wasn’t a speck of dust anywhere. Breakfast was over the top! A buffet of any and everything delicious. It definitely prepared you for the full day of sightseeing.
Day 1: SIGHTSEEING AROUND THE CITY!!!
Neptune FountainOld Stock Exchange Captivating Architecture Around Every Corner! This splendid city on the Adriatic Sea beckons you to stroll it’s streets. There is so much to see!! Narrow cobble stone alleyways lead you past apartments with beautiful draping flowers overflowing from window boxes. The smell of coffee and pastries is so irresistible you have to stop for just one of their sweet treats!! Ok! Maybe two.😋It is everything I thought it would be!!
ANCIENT RUINS
Roman Amphitheater An Ancient Roman Amphitheatre and other ruins in and around the city are surprises from the past. Seriously, you are walking past modern abodes and storefronts then turn the corner and in amazement, a ancient Roman Amphitheater! Wow!!
PIAZZA UNITA D’ITALIA
The Piazza is located where the old part of the city meets the new part. It is one of the favorite meeting points of Trieste and a site where official events are still held. The buildings that adorn the square are spectacular and each has such intricate details from the knobs on the doors to the hairs on the head of a each statue.
Government Palace
DAY 2: A TOUR OF CASTLE MIRAMARE
Miramare Castle stands above the sea in the Bay of Grignano. It is the first sight you have coming into Trieste while driving along the picturesque coastline. The stunning white castle, the home of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg and wife Charlotte of Belgium was completed in 1860. The castle and its grounds are a definite must see while in Trieste. Simply beautiful!!! And….it comes with a tragic love story you must learn for yourself.
The view from these columns was just spectacular!!Breathtakingly Beautiful!!Castle Miramare Exterior and GroundsCastle Miramare Interior- this is just a sample of the interior. There is so much more to see!!
DAY 3 (Morning): Illy Coffee Tour
This adventure to The campus of Illy Coffee University had my husband beyond excited. As soon as he read how we would be touring Illy and sampling some of the finest coffee in the world, he just could not contain himself! When we arrived on campus I could understand why. The aroma that filled every nook and cranny was glorious!
DAY 3 (Afternoon & Evening): Trieste’s many coffee shops and bistros
“Capo in B” only found in Trieste!!!This was a most exciting adventure!! A coffee expert from Illy Coffee escorted us throughout Trieste’s City Center to explore all the different coffee shops and bistros. If you are a lover of coffee then this is for you. Walking through the streets of Trieste and literally stopping at a dozen Illy Bistros to sample their specialty was just incredible . If you just “like” coffee, you’ll love it by the end.
DAY 4: Exploring Trieste’s Amazing Food!!
More Illy Coffee😊These two guys were the bomb!! So very friendly! Our hotel Breakfast!😋Cheese TrayMeat TrayThe variety of food was vast but it all had one thing in common, it was delicious! A personal favorite restaurant was Assaje. Their brick oven cooking was fantastic. They were so proud to have Americans in their restaurant and wanted us to try everything. What a wonderful treat. We recognized at least five languages from different tables and we all had a smile on our face and a full belly when we left. Hint…you’re not done eating until they’re done serving.
